β 15 January. Declared after the exchanges published their annual circulars in December 2025, when the Maharashtra government made polling day a public holiday. That is why the date appears on the trading calendar but not on any of the December settlement circulars, and why several holiday lists published in early 2026 still show fifteen holidays rather than sixteen.
β‘ 8 November. NSE has confirmed Muhurat trading will be conducted on Diwali Laxmi Pujan. The session timing is issued in a separate circular, usually in October. It is a full trading session with normal settlement obligations.

4 days when the market trades and your money doesnβt move
A trading holiday closes the exchange. A settlement holiday closes the clearing corporation while the exchange stays open β you can buy and sell as usual, but the pay-in and pay-out of funds and shares is pushed to the next working day. They are published as two separate circulars, and in 2026 they differ.

Long weekends in 2026
7 holidays fall next to a weekend, each producing a three-day market break. No holiday in 2026 produces a four-day one β every Tuesday holiday leaves the Monday open in between.

Questions
Common questions
How many stock market holidays are there in 2026?
Sixteen weekday trading holidays on NSE and BSE. A further four fall on a Saturday or Sunday, when the market is closed anyway, so they are usually listed separately. The clearing corporation observes twenty settlement holidays, which is a different and longer list.
Are NSE and BSE holidays the same?
Yes. Both exchanges publish an identical equity and equity-derivatives holiday calendar, and have done for years. A date that closes one closes the other.
What is the difference between a trading holiday and a settlement holiday?
A trading holiday closes the exchange β no orders, no prices. A settlement holiday closes the clearing corporation while the exchange trades normally, so trades execute but the exchange of funds and securities is deferred to the next working day. In 2026 there are four such days: 19 February, 19 March, 1 April and 26 August.
Is the commodity market closed on the same days as equity?
Not usually. On most equity holidays MCX shuts only its morning session (09:00β17:00) and reopens for the evening session at 17:00. Republic Day, Good Friday, Gandhi Jayanti and Christmas close both. New Yearβs Day is the reverse: the morning session trades and the evening session is shut.
When is Muhurat trading in 2026?
Sunday 8 November 2026, on Diwali Laxmi Pujan. NSE has confirmed the session; the exact timing is announced by a separate circular, normally in October. Trades in a Muhurat session are real trades that settle in the ordinary way.
Why do some lists show fifteen holidays and some sixteen?
Because 15 January was added after the annual circulars were published. The Maharashtra government declared municipal-election polling day a public holiday and the exchanges closed. Lists compiled from the December 2025 circulars and never revisited still show fifteen.
Can I place orders while the market is closed?
Most brokers accept after-market orders and queue them for the next sessionβs pre-open. They are not executed during the holiday, and the price you get is the price when the market next opens, which can differ from the last close if news breaks over the break.
Are mutual fund transactions processed on a market holiday?
No NAV is declared for a day the market is shut. A purchase or redemption submitted on a holiday takes the NAV of the next business day, subject to the cut-off and realisation rules of the scheme.

Exchanges can add or move a holiday during the year by circular β a state election or a day of national mourning are the usual causes.
